Following the timely intervention of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in the alleged wrongful sacking/downgrading of workers in Akwa Ibom state University, the school has made concessions that have saved the jobs of several workers of the institution.
Moments ago, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Onofiok Luke read a letter from the school management where they said that persons who were offered temporary appointments as academic staff members in disciplines which are not available in the University but are relevant to General Studies will be placed in the General Studies Unit as academic staff members of the University and their appointments accordingly regularised. The staff were among those earlier sacked by the school.
Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke had earlier mandated the committees on Public Petition and Education to speed up investigation into the issue which was brought to the attention of the House by Hon. Friday Iwok. The Speaker said there was need for the decision of the management of the Akwa Ibom State University to be reversed for the sake of the workers who were earlier sacked by the school.
He said the amicable resolution of the matter following the House’ intervention shows the existent synergy among governmental agencies and institutions in the state. The House unanimously adopted the 6 resolutions made by the joint committees on Public Petition and education, one of which is that now that the issue has been resolved, the school should ensure that none of the affected staff or Union leaders should be victimised for the roles they played in the course of seeking justice.
